As one who has grown up surrounded by music, I tend to think I’m biased. But then research is done, studies come out, and I pick up my phone to call my parents and thank them for my upbringing in music. From a personal standpoint, music has shaped how I view the world. It adds beauty in the silence, it is relatable no matter what mood I’m in, and because of how accessible it is today, it’s always there when I need it. But don’t even get me started on the importance of music lessons…
As stated in the video, we’ve known for quite some time that taking music lessons as a kid has a plethora of benefits including: better memory, higher grades, higher graduation rates, higher IQ, and higher academic performance as a whole.
“Learning an instrument can help grow the young and changing brain.”
The cortex of the brain changes in thickness as children grow, and a study from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2014 found that the more a child practices an instrument, the faster their brains will organize. These changes in the brain contribute to important changes in behavior such as: better attention span, anxiety management, and controlling emotions and impulses.
Another study, done by researchers at Northwestern University in 2014 found that children that had taken music lessons for two years had better communication and reading skills than their non-musical peers.
All statistics aside, music lessons changed my life and I believe that no matter what the instrument, every kid should try out a couple months of private music lessons. My hope is that one day all children will have access to fun, quality music instruction, but in the meantime, if you’re living in the DFW area, you can get a FREE lesson with Zera Music Company. We have qualified, passionate instructors located all over DFW that will actually come to your home!
